The REAL Issues With Ohio State Football: Time to Panic?

Ohio State football, one of the most storied programs in college football history, is facing serious questions as it heads into the final stretch of its season. The Buckeyes have historically been a powerhouse, consistently competing for Big Ten titles and College Football Playoff berths. However, as we approach the end of another season, it’s becoming evident that there are several issues within the program that could threaten their championship aspirations. Let’s break down the real problems and whether it’s time for Ohio State fans to panic.

1. Quarterback Play – The Elephant in the Room

At the core of Ohio State’s current struggles is quarterback play. Kyle McCord, in his first full season as a starter, has shown flashes of potential but has been inconsistent. Ohio State’s offense, once known for its explosive passing attack under quarterbacks like Justin Fields and Dwayne Haskins, has become more methodical and, at times, sluggish. McCord’s decision-making has been questionable, especially in high-pressure situations. Against top-tier competition, his inability to consistently execute in key moments has left fans and analysts wondering if he’s truly the answer for a program with national title ambitions.

The quarterback position is where elite programs are often made or broken. A team like Ohio State, with championship expectations, needs a signal-caller who can command the offense with confidence. McCord’s development and ability to perform under pressure will be crucial to Ohio State’s playoff hopes, but there’s no denying that the uncertainty at this position is one of the program’s major weaknesses.

2. Offensive Line Inconsistency

While Ohio State’s offensive line has been a force in previous seasons, it has been a point of vulnerability this year. The Buckeyes have had issues with protecting the quarterback and establishing a consistent running game. The offensive line’s struggles were especially evident in games against physical defenses, where Ohio State was unable to dominate in the trenches. Against Michigan, a team known for its stout defensive front, Ohio State was unable to assert its will in the ground game, a key factor in their loss.

The offensive line’s inability to control the line of scrimmage has affected both the passing and rushing attacks. McCord has had to deal with constant pressure, while running backs have found it difficult to break free for big plays. A balanced offense that can both throw and run the ball effectively is essential to winning championships. If the Buckeyes cannot fix their issues on the offensive line, they will continue to struggle against the elite defenses in the Big Ten and beyond.

3. Lack of Explosive Plays

One of Ohio State’s trademarks in recent years has been its ability to score quickly and efficiently, often through explosive plays in the passing game. However, this season, the big plays have been hard to come by. The absence of a true deep threat, like Jaxon Smith-Njigba or Chris Olave in recent years, has hampered the offense’s ability to stretch the field and create mismatches. McCord, though capable, has not been able to develop the kind of connection with his wide receivers that previous quarterbacks enjoyed.

This lack of explosive plays has forced Ohio State to grind out drives, something that the program has not had to do in recent years. Against top-tier competition, where every possession matters, this methodical approach can be risky. Without the ability to strike quickly, the Buckeyes become more predictable and easier to defend. If they are to make a deep run into the postseason, finding a way to generate big plays again will be paramount.

4. Defensive Question Marks

While Ohio State’s defense has been one of the better units in the Big Ten, there have been cracks in the armor. The Buckeyes’ defense has struggled against mobile quarterbacks and been exposed in the secondary at times. Though defensive coordinator Jim Knowles has instilled a more aggressive mindset, the defense has shown inconsistency, especially in games where they’ve been asked to step up in critical moments.

While players like J.T. Tuimoloau and Marvin Harrison Jr. have stood out, the defense’s lack of depth and occasional lapses in coverage have been concerning. Against elite offenses, Ohio State has to be able to bend but not break—something they’ve struggled to do in key moments.

5. Special Teams – A Hidden Liability

Special teams are often the overlooked aspect of a championship-caliber team, but they can have a massive impact on a game. Ohio State’s special teams have been a bit of a liability this season, with inconsistent kicking and coverage units. In a close game, a missed field goal, a botched punt, or poor kick coverage could be the difference between a win and a loss. With the increased competition in the Big Ten and national title picture, Ohio State cannot afford to have these breakdowns.

Is It Time to Panic?

While it’s easy to jump to conclusions after a couple of tough performances, it’s important to remember that Ohio State is still one of the top teams in the country. However, these issues—quarterback inconsistency, offensive line play, lack of explosive plays, defensive vulnerabilities, and special teams problems—are not trivial. In a season where teams like Michigan, Georgia, and Alabama have shown significant strength, Ohio State needs to fix these issues fast if they hope to compete for a national title.

It’s not quite time to panic, but it’s certainly time for Ohio State to make adjustments and improve in these critical areas. If they can stabilize quarterback play, shore up the offensive line, rediscover their explosiveness, and tighten up their defense and special teams, they’ll still be a contender. But if these problems persist, Ohio State’s playoff hopes may slip away. Time is running out, and the pressure is mounting.
