When it comes to combined attendance for basketball and football, Tennessee is in the lead, underscoring the advantage that the state’s fans have when games are held in Knoxville.
The Vols have one of the largest basketball and football stadiums in the nation, but what matters most in this area is consistently drawing people into the stands. It can be more difficult to fill a larger stadium to capacity.
Author and strategy consultant Tony Altimore provided a thorough analysis of the combined chart, which includes top men’s basketball teams and FBS football schools, on Sunday morning.
No one has a higher total attendance than Tennessee, despite the fact that three football programs and four basketball programs have better average attendance. To be honest, it’s not even close.
Is there a small yellow dot visible in the graph’s upper right corner? Tennessee is that.
From a Tennessee perspective, it’s also noteworthy that the Vols’ home basketball schedule hasn’t increased at all thus far. It’s difficult to determine whether the sell-out attendance from Saturday night’s Ole Miss game was included in the chart since Altimore released it early on Sunday morning. Nevertheless, Tennessee Tech, Wofford, George Mason, Illinois, Georgia Southern, Tarleton State, and Norfolk State have all been on the state’s home schedule this season.
With home games remaining against Florida, Alabama, LSU, Vanderbilt, Texas A&M, Auburn, and Kentucky, it’s not difficult to predict that Tennessee’s basketball attendance will increase significantly by the end of the regular season. The Vols might make a big push up here in the coming weeks since they are currently trailing Syracuse, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Arkansas.
Two of the Vols’ eight home games this season—against Illinois and Ole Miss—have sold out, with the latter drawing a crowd of 21,932 spectators. This is how Tennessee’s residence

chairs. This season, Tennessee’s athletic department has done a fantastic job of getting supporters excited about the games they can witness. But to reach a statistic like this, as was previously noted, you need a fan base that is prepared to get up and attend a football game at noon or a basketball game on Tuesday night. It’s also not shocking. The Vols’ ardent supporters are prepared to go to any lengths to witness their teams play in Knoxville. Tuesday, January 16, Tennessee men’s basketball will host the Florida Gators back on the floor in Knoxville. In the meanwhile, the Vols go to Mississippi State on Wednesday and to Georgia on Saturday. Tony Altimore deserves praise for creating such a readable graphic on X. |
