The Bears assert that they are still committed to Justin Fields.
We won’t know for a while if they genuinely mean it or are just acting in this way to keep people guessing about what they’ll do with the first pick in the draft.
“It depends on what factors are in it, but in my mind right now I’m going to take this all the way to April,” Ryan Poles, General Manager, stated.
For the time being, though, they will at least state what’s right, like they did during their news conference to close the season.
“We adore Justin’s current situation,” head coach Matt Eberflus stated. “His growth has been impressive. With his eyes down the field, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the interceptions down and the sack totals.
“He’s done a wonderful job with that, being able to deliver some strikes down there, and he’ll continue to grow as we grow as a football team.”
That virtually confirms Fields’ return.
Of course, it can all be subterfuge. Next season, Fields might be developing somewhere else as the Bears advance as a football team.
They will examine the available talent in the lead-up to the draft.
“I’ll actually go back to last year, and I’ve got to stay open minded about it, but I really—not to use the same quote (as last year), but—want to say blown away, but it’s the same setup,” Poles stated. “Seeing the things Justin did this year, his ability to make plays, coach talked about some of those improvements, keeping his eyes down the field, taking less sacks, seeing a lot of growth where he can continue to get better.”
