The South Alabama head coach leaves the Mobile program to run the Crimson Tide’s defense under the new regime.
After taking over as head coach of the Alabama football team, Kalen DeBoer didn’t have much time to spare in Tuscaloosa. In order to make sure that the transition went as smoothly as possible and preserve the Crimson Tide program’s championship standard and tradition, he had to act quickly to assemble a coaching staff.
DeBoer hired a number of coaches from his Washington staff, including Ryan Grubb as offensive coordinator, so it seemed like he had little trouble making his offensive decisions.
The Alabama defense was different, though, as well-known secondary coach Travaris Robinson left The Capstone to accept a co-defensive coordinator role at the University of Georgia, and former defensive coordinator Kevin Steele announced his retirement last week.
Chris Low and Brett McMurphy have reported that DeBoer plans to choose South Alabama head coach Kane Wommack as the Alabama Crimson Tide’s new defensive coordinator.
Wommack, a 36-year-old tight end and fullback, was a student-athlete at Southern Miss and Arkansas universities. Dave, his father, is a former collegiate football coach who worked under Hugh Freeze as Ole Miss’ defensive coordinator for his final five seasons in the position.
Before going to Jacksonville State to work under Jack Crowe, he began his collegiate coaching career as a quarterbacks coach at UT-Martin. After playing one season with the Gamecocks, Wommack went on to work with his father as an Ole Miss defensive backs coach.
