The Red Sox were able to sign overseas amateur baseball players on Monday for the first time.
This provides an insight into the organization’s far-off future.
The Red Sox are anticipated to sign 45 players on Monday, many of whom are still in their teen years, according to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe. Vladimir Asencio, a Dominican Republic native who turned 17 last month, stands out in the huge class.
The right-handed-hitting and throwing Asencio plays center field and is considered as a great defender and solid contact hitter. Asencio has attracted similarities to a previous Red Sox prospect, Manuel Margot, according to Speier. Margot came up through the Red Sox system and has enjoyed an eight-year Major League Baseball career with the San Diego Padres and Tampa Bay Rays.
Could this offseason be a momentous one for the Boston Red Sox?
Despite adding former All-Star Lucas Giolito, Boston’s starting rotation still has gaps. Before trading away Chris Sale, the Red Sox needed to sign two starters going into the summer.
Giolito gives Boston what it needs, but the team probably still needs two pitchers. Every possible pitcher has some connection to the Red Sox. But with Spring Training drawing near, Boston’s options are becoming more limited.
One player that is still available and has been connected to the Red Sox on multiple occasions is Blake Snell, the 2023 National League Cy Young Award winner. Although it’s unknown where he will end up, Tim Britton and Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic believe that Boston is still one of the “best fits.”
