A familiar face reportedly is back with the Giants.
San Francisco has hired former manager Dusty Baker as a special assistant, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported Monday. Per Nightengale, Baker will work with Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi in baseball operations as well as assist president Larry Baer on the team’s ownership side.
Although Baker stated to 95.7 The Game last month that he was considering a role with the Giants, the claimed news isn’t totally shocking.
“I’m speaking with the Giants as well,” Baker revealed to F.P. Santangelo and Jason Dumas. “We just have to wait and see how things pan out for all of us. I spoke with Larry Baer the other day about the potential of possibly even joining them.
The discussions are preliminary. As mentioned, I spoke with Larry. I’m eager to speak with Farhan. The River Cats are a team that plays here in Sacramento, where I am. We’ll examine if there are any family-related, time-related, or other issues that we can resolve. We’re simply having preliminary conversations, like I mentioned. We’ll observe how things transpire.
Former outfielder Baker managed the Giants for ten seasons (1993–2002), winning three NL Manager of the Year awards (1993, 1997, 2000). Baker played for the Giants for one season in 1984. On October 25, 2023, he announced his retirement after leading the Houston Astros to a World Series victory in 2022.
