After firing Luke Getsy after just two seasons, the Chicago Bears are currently looking for a new offensive coordinator.
Chicago has swung a broad net in their pursuit of prospects, scouting not only playcallers with expertise but also young coaches and certain candidates who would be deemed ideal fits for players like Caleb Williams or Justin Fields (who many believe the Bears will select first overall).
Head coach Matt Eberflus outlined his requirements for a new offensive coordinator, stating that Getsy’s approach lacked flexibility.
“Obviously you want to have somebody that’s a great teacher,” Eberflus stated. “You know he has to coach the coaches in order to coach the position, so I believe that’s vital. And that, in my opinion, is the most important quality in a coach: the ability to think creatively and strategically in order to assess your players and help them develop so they can succeed, generate explosive plays, and advance the ball down the field.”
Background: Brady has been with the Philadelphia Eagles for the last two seasons, most recently as a senior offensive assistant after serving as an offensive consultant. Brady worked his way up the ladder with the Indianapolis Colts and Frank Reich for a number of years prior to that. After serving as an assistant quarterbacks coach in 2018, Brady went on to become the quarterbacks coach in 2019–20, the offensive coordinator in 2021–2022. Brady has a working relationship and acquaintance with Matt Eberflus from their time together in Indianapolis. In the Canadian Football League, Brady began his career as the offensive coordinator for the Toronto Argonauts (2013–17) and Montreal Alouettes (2012).
Fit with Bears: With the uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position for 2024, Chicago’s desire for offensive flexibility makes sense. During his tenure in the NFL, Brady has coached some well-known quarterbacks: he was Andrew Luck’s assistant quarterbacks coach in 2018, Philip Rivers’ quarterbacks coach in 2020, and now a senior offensive consultant for the Eagles, who play quarterback Jalen Hurts. Even if Brady and Matt Eberflus are connected, it’s important to remember that Brady has experience calling plays at the NFL level. His last offensive coordinator position was with the Colts (2021–2022) under Frank Reich, where the passing game was lacking greatly. This doesn’t seem like a move Chicago would make as they try to advance offensively, given Luke Getsy’s difficulties as a rookie playcaller and the Bears’ ambition to become more explosive.
