– The rival New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox announced that outfielder Alex Verdugo would be traded for three players.
The trade was announced Tuesday night by the Red Sox and Yankees. In exchange, they received minor league right-handers Richard Fitts and Nicholas Judice as well as right-hander Greg Weissert.
The Red Sox said on social media, “For the passion, for the electricity, for all the memories.” “Thank you, Dugie.”
In 142 games during the previous season, Verdugo, 27, hit.264 with 13 home runs and 54 RBIs for the Red Sox. In 493 games over four seasons with the American League East team, he hit.281 with 43 home runs.
Verdugo reached a career-high after being traded by the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Boston Red Sox in 2020.308 during his inaugural campaign with the team. As part of the five-player trade, the Dodgers obtained former Red Sox players David Price and Mookie Betts.
2017 saw Verdugo make his Dodgers debut. During his first three seasons, he hit.282 with 14 home runs. His lifetime batting average stands at.281. Over the course of his first 651 career games, Verdugo hit 57 home runs and amassed 20 stolen bases.
In 2024, he will be qualified for arbitration. By 2025, he might be a free agent.
Weissert, 28, had a 4.05 ERA in 17 Yankees games the previous year. In 12 games in 2022, he recorded a 3-0 record and a 5.56 ERA. In the 2016 MLB Draft, he was selected by the Yankees in the 18th round.
The Yankees selected Fitts, 23, in the sixth round of the 2021 MLB Draft. In 49 appearances over the course of two minor league seasons, the 2023 Eastern League Pitcher of the Year went 18-13 with a 3.57 ERA. According to MLB Pipeline, he was the No. 12 prospect with the Yankees and is currently the No. 10 player in the Red Sox system.
In the 2023 MLB Draft, Judice, 22, was selected in the eighth round. In 59 games during his college career at Louisiana-Monroe, he finished 8-5 with a 4.09 ERA. In three seasons of collegiate summer league play, he was 1-1 with a 4.55 ERA.
MLB catchers and pitchers will report to their separate spring training facilities in Arizona and Florida in February.
