Boston — With Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, and Kyle Teel as their “Big Three” of elite prospects, the future is bright for the Boston Red Sox.
This season, the three will begin play at Double-A Portland. Anthony’s promotion from High-A to Double-A during the second half of the previous season helped him establish himself as one of Boston’s best prospects.
The major league team in Boston has struggled to identify starting pitchers, and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow acknowledged that difficult choices would have to be made. But none of them entails letting go of Teel, Mayer, or Anthony. Although those are high standards, the 19-year-old outfielder welcomes them.
It’s excellent. Anthony stated during the Red Sox development program, “It’s an honor to be mentioned, and it’s an honor to be counted on.” Of course, you have to always see the bright side of things. But we haven’t arrived yet. We’re not there yet, none of us. There is much work ahead of us. Before we get there, we still have a long way to go. The ultimate objective is the same, and I believe I can speak for all of the guys in this room. It’s to win a World Series here in Boston and hoist that banner. I believe that everyone is just trying their hardest to get there and take in the sights along the route.
Anthony is taking advantage of all the opportunities during spring training and the Red Sox development program. He will be one of several elite prospects hoping to make an impression in Fort Myers, Florida.
Yes, I believe it improves with each passing period. It feels even more genuine being here, in this locker room, and among some of the big-league coordinators and coaches. It is incredible how much closer it feels as a result. It’s incredible. It’s fantastic to absorb as much knowledge as I can from all of these guys and to learn from people with such a wealth of expertise.
