The Philadelphia Phillies continue to search of an outfield upgrade heading into the season.
Before spring training, outfielder Brandon Mash of the Philadelphia Phillies underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on his left knee.
Marsh should be back and ready for Opening Day in three to four weeks.
The Phillies are apparently searching for outfield depth even if the injury eliminates the need to add another starter outfielder. The Phillies aren’t searching for a Marsh replacement along the lines of Cody Bellinger, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
The Phillies are only harmed by Marsh’s injury because it means he will lag behind the rest of the club as the regular season draws near.
However, it does allow other internal prospects to get additional playing time while the club is in Clearwater getting adjusted.
Dave Dombrowski says the team’s Opening Day center fielder will probably be Johan Rojas. That may indicate that in 2024 Marsh will venture into uncharted territory.
With Marsh, the 40-man roster includes six outfielders, including Nick Castellanos and Kyle Schwarber, two of the worst defensive outfielders in MLB.
Other names besides Bellinger might have an effect on Philadelphia. One of the best hitters available right now, Jorge Soler, but also a mediocre defender. It’s unclear if Dombrowski wants to strengthen his offensive or defensive capabilities.
Whit Merrifield is an intriguing name as well. Merrifield, who has outfield experience, has been mentioned as a possible target. In 2023, the 35-year-old was named an All-Star for the third time in his NBA career.
His cheap salary may be a deciding factor in whatever the Phillies decide to do.
The season is almost here, so if something were to happen, don’t be surprised.
