LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers had surgery on his ankle during the All-Star break, which prevented him from playing in Thursday’s rematch with the Golden State Warriors. The Lakers were happy to have him back for their game on Friday against the San Antonio Spurs because the outcome was a disappointing loss. Obviously, James didn’t miss a stride.
James completed with 13 of his 22 field goals for 30 points, 7 rebounds, and 9 assists. He and Spencer Dinwiddie were tied for a game-high plus-21 points in the Lakers’ eventual five-point victory over Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs. Even though it was James’ first game in more than a week, he didn’t seem to be bothered by his ankle at all and appeared focused.
Even while things aren’t perfect, he was pleased with how well he responded on Friday night, both psychologically and physically.
Regarding his ankle, James remarked, “Feel pretty good.” To be honest, I was more astonished by how well my wind worked, but my ankle held up fairly well. I was glad to be there and contribute to my team’s victory. That was the most crucial thing.
James shared additional details about his plans for the remainder of the 2023–24 season, including the rationale behind the mid-season treatment.
That’s the intention. That is the hope, but nothing is certain,” James remarked. That’s the strategy Mike (Mancias) and I used to approach it. We knew the itinerary months in advance, so it wasn’t something we just suddenly came up with. Just looking for ways to make the most of the days we get to spend together. The time I had between when we played here on Tuesday of last week and today was helpful to me.
If the Lakers hope to go on a stretch run this season, they must have James healthy as soon as possible. They are still a few games away from climbing out of the No. 9 position in the Western Conference rankings at 31-27, and every game they lose makes it harder to do so.
In order to prevent the Lakers from having to miss any major time and go into another Play-In Tournament, hopefully James is now prepared for that run.
LeBron James believes Wembanyama has a unique potential.
Before the Lakers’ game against the Spurs, James discussed his feelings toward Wembanyama in the midst of his amazing rookie year. If this is where the French sensation is at less than a full season into his NBA career, he sees a particular future for himself, the man commended.
