ECU fires Godwin as baseball coachEast Carolina University (ECU) has faced multiple incidents leading to suspensions of its baseball coaches over the years. In October 2005, head coach Randy Mazey was suspended with pay due to unspecified reasons. Assistant coach Billy Godwin stepped in as acting head coach for the remainder of the 2006 season.

More recently, in May 2024, head coach Cliff Godwin and infielder Dixon Williams were suspended following an incident during a game against Wichita State. The American Athletic Conference announced that Godwin received a two-game suspension, while Williams was suspended for one game. The suspensions were related to a slide play that occurred during the game.

These incidents highlight the challenges ECU’s baseball program has faced concerning coach suspensions. The university and the American Athletic Conference have taken disciplinary actions to address these issues and maintain the integrity of the sport.
