Robby Ashford is Auburn’s starting quarterback as of right now, unless the Tigers add a quarterback via the transfer portal.
Hugh Freeze and his team have obviously made an attempt to search for and acquire a signal-caller via the portal throughout the summer, but they haven’t been able to find one they like for whatever reason.
Although Hugh Freeze has improved the Tigers’ talent at other positionsāeven ones where depth has started to developāthe most noteworthy thing he has done with the portal thus far is improving Auburn’s quarterback room depth.
Until Auburn perhaps lands one in the portal, here’s a look at the scholarship quarterbacks currently on the roster and how a depth chart might look coming into the spring.
Ashley Robby
Ashford did not see the field throughout his first two seasons at Oregon. After transferring to Auburn in 2022, he was given TJ Finley’s backup position at the start of the season. For the first two weeks, he basically shared the field with Finley.
After Finley was hurt in the third week of the season against Penn State, Ashford assumed the starting job and did not let it go. He finished just 49.2% of his passes for the season, but he showed great promise as a dual threat, racking up over 700 rushing yards and establishing himself as Auburn’s top quarterback prospect going into 2023.
With his track record of developing quarterbacks, Hugh Freeze ought to be able to improve Ashford’s passing game. Freeze has the potential to develop into a legitimate quarterback for the Tigers if they choose to start him and he proves to be a significant threat in the SEC the following season.
There is more to the athleticism than that. Step two is to refine his mechanics.
