Brendan Rodgers’ squad is aiming to win the Scottish Cup now that the Premiership championship is almost certain.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is aiming for a Double this season, with the title within reach – and he could break some Rangers records along the way.
The Hoops are aware that any slip-up by Philippe Clement’s side in their final two games against Dundee and Hearts would result in a third consecutive title for Glasgow’s east end, whereas Rodgers’ men can win it with just one point from their remaining Scottish Premiership fixtures against Kilmarnock and St Mirren. However, with the league all but decided, attention is swiftly shifting to the next derby showdown between the Glasgow heavyweights.
The Scottish Cup Final will most likely see both sides vying for a double, with Rangers having already won the League Cup this season, while Celtic should have the Premiership championship safely stored in the Celtic Park trophy cabinet once more. However, a win for Rodgers’ men might result in a slew of Ibrox records falling.
But what exactly does Callum McGregor lifting the trophy imply for the record books? Record Sport looks at four marks that Celtic could beat or match this season.
European record of domestic cup wins
While Celtic have dominated cup tournaments in recent seasons, Rangers have done enough to keep up with their rivals, and they share the record most European domestic cup wins. Clement guided the Light Blues to the League Cup earlier this season, levelling the tally at 62 trophies each. A victory for either team in the national stadium would see the record restored entirely.
Most league and cup doubles
Should Celtic win the Scottish Cup, they will break another record. As of now, Rangers and the Hoops have won a league and cup double 12 times each. Rangers last achieved the Double in 2008/09, when they won the title and the Scottish Cup under Walter Smith, while Celtic did so in 2021/22 under Ange Postecoglou, winning the League Cup and the Premiership title.
Old Firm derby win record
Bragging rights will be decided by whoever wins the Scottish Cup at the end of the season, but it will also have a significant impact on the sides’ all-time head-to-head records. Odgers has dominated the derby this season, while Clement has yet to win.
That leaves the all-time derby record standing at 169 wins for Rangers and 168 for Celtic. That’s one stat Hoops fans will be keen to see removed on the road to a Double.
