The Miami Hurricanes are still in the top 12 of the College Football Playoffs rankings, but they are absent from the projected playoff brackets.

For the first time since the initial rankings were released earlier this season, Miami is out of the College Football Playoffs. The Hurricanes were ranked No. 12 by the committee on Tuesday ahead of Sunday’s official selection show, but they would get bumped out by Arizona State, ranked 15th but seeded 12th, as the potential Big 12 champions. The Sun Devils play No. 16 Iowa State in that title game this weekend.

The Hurricanes lost their second game of the season last week against Syracuse, knocking them out of the ACC Championship game and essentially ending all hopes of making the inaugural 12-team playoffs.

The committee previously had Miami set to receive a first-round bye as the projected winner of the ACC. Now they tumble down the rankings and sit at No. 12.

Instead, it’ll be either SMU or Clemson who’ll get the honor of a bye week as a power five champion of the ACC.
