Kellie Harper, Former Lady Vol and Three-Time Champion, Takes on New Role in the SEC

Kellie Harper, a distinguished alumna of the University of Tennessee and a three-time national champion, is returning to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) as the new head coach of the University of Missouri women’s basketball program. The appointment marks an exciting new chapter in Harper’s illustrious career, as she steps into a role that combines her deep connection to the SEC and her wealth of experience both as a player and coach.

A former standout player for the Lady Vols under legendary coach Pat Summitt, Harper enjoyed a remarkable college basketball career. She played a key role in leading Tennessee to back-to-back national championships in 1997 and 1998, cementing her legacy as one of the program’s all-time greats. Throughout her playing career, Harper was known for her leadership, basketball IQ, and competitive drive—traits she would later carry into her coaching journey.

After concluding her playing career, Harper transitioned into coaching, and her trajectory has been impressive. She has coached at various levels, including at Western Carolina and, most recently, at the University of Tennessee, where she previously served as the associate head coach before taking the Missouri job. At Western Carolina, she turned the program around, rebuilding it into a consistent contender in the Southern Conference.

Harper’s experience and understanding of the SEC make her a natural fit for the Missouri position. Her familiarity with the league’s competitive landscape and her ability to develop talent on and off the court will be essential as she works to elevate Missouri’s program.

Missouri athletics director Desiree Reed-Francois expressed confidence in Harper’s ability to lead, noting her proven track record and dedication to building a winning culture. As Harper prepares for her first season at the helm, the Missouri women’s basketball program is poised for a new era under her guidance.
