Marc Guehi has just made an interesting remark regarding Newcastle United while representing England at the Euros.
The Crystal Palace defender was one of England’s greatest players in Sunday’s 1-0 victory against Serbia, and he is expected to continue at centre-back with John Stones against Denmark on Thursday. Kieran Trippier will join Marc Guehi in defence, with the Newcastle United man poised to start at left-back in place of Luke Shaw.
Guehi was the subject of much worry leading up to the competition. There were concerns that England might be vulnerable at centre-back without Harry Maguire, but Guehi dispelled those doubts with an outstanding performance in the Three Lions’ opening.
That is why he is so highly regarded, and why several Premier League clubs want to sign him.
Newcastle United has been connected, with the Magpies looking to add another centre-back after signing Lloyd Kelly.
Guehi would be a good fit for Eddie Howe, but he may be too pricey.
Despite these concerns, Guehi has sparked excitement among Toon fans by mentioning the club in an interview on England’s official Instagram account.
The 23-year-old was speaking to Josh Denzel, who was asking Guehi questions that had been submitted by fans, one of which wanted to know āwhat is the finest ground you have ever played in?ā. The host then extended his hand and instructed Guehi to exclude Selhrust Park, which houses Crystal Palace.
āIād say in the Prem, probably Newcastle, St Jamesā Park,ā he said.
āItās just really, really loud in there. The fans make it really difficult when we go there so probably St Jamesā Park.ā
Given the rumours of interest from Newcastle, hearing Guehi talk so warmly about St James’ Park is really intriguing. He like the vibe of the North East, which he could experience more frequently if he signed with the Magpies.
However, a deal would come as a great surprise, according to HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey, who spoke with Geordie Boot Boys regarding Guehi’s potential move to Newcastle United this summer.
āI donāt think Newcastle are going to spend Ā£60million on a centre-back this summer,ā he said.
āMarc Guehi is clearly someone who they like, but I canāt see them paying that much for another centre-back now that Lloyd Kelly is through the door.
āHe would be perfect for a lot of teams, and Newcastle are one of them, but I do not see it happening.ā
Finances will be an issue. Newcastle definitely has money to spend, but the majority of it will go towards a right winger. One target is Guehi’s Palace teammate Michael Olise, who is expected to cost over Ā£60 million.
If Newcastle spends that much money on a winger, it’s difficult to imagine them spending the same amount on a centre-back. Given Palace’s desire to maintain Guehi, this is most likely the price. Furthermore, if he continues to perform at Euro 2024, they will most likely be able to increase his asking price.
The Magpies want another centre-back, and Guehi would be ideal, but only if the money allows it. To be honest, it would be a huge surprise if Newcastle had enough money to sign him.
That would disappoint Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, who was asked about the possibility of signing Guehi during an interview with TalkSPORT.
āI havenāt actually seen the Newcastle links, but it goes without saying Iād absolutely love him to come because heās a top player and heād make us a better team,ā he said.
