SHOCKWAVE IN RECRUITING: Four-Star QB Brady Cook Decommits from Missouri, Flips to Ohio State over Notre Dame and Penn State
In a stunning move that’s sent shockwaves across the college football recruiting landscape, four-star quarterback Brady Cook has officially decommitted from the University of Missouri and flipped his commitment to Ohio State, choosing the Buckeyes over other top-tier programs including Notre Dame and Penn State.
The news broke early Thursday morning via Cook’s social media, where he posted a graphic featuring himself in an Ohio State uniform with the caption: “New chapter. Same mission. Committed to THE Ohio State University.”
This flip marks one of the biggest recruiting twists of the 2025 cycle and deals a significant blow to Missouri, which had counted on Cook as the centerpiece of its future offense. Cook, a 6’3” dual-threat QB from St. Louis, Missouri, is ranked as the No. 7 quarterback in the nation and No. 51 overall prospect according to 247Sports. His combination of arm strength, pocket poise, and running ability had made him a prized target for Power Five programs nationwide.
Cook initially committed to Missouri back in June 2024, choosing the Tigers over offers from Michigan, Texas A&M, and Florida. His decision was celebrated by Mizzou fans and coaches alike, particularly with the Tigers coming off their best season in over a decade and a top-10 finish nationally. Many believed Cook would help usher in a new era of sustained success in Columbia.
However, behind the scenes, sources say the situation began to shift in early March. Cook reportedly had multiple private visits to Columbus and South Bend, and the momentum began swinging heavily in Ohio State’s favor in recent weeks. The Buckeyes’ recent quarterback development success—including C.J. Stroud and Kyle McCord heading to the NFL—combined with a deep receiver room and a history of playoff contention, made Ohio State too compelling to pass up.
“I want to thank Coach Drinkwitz, the staff at Mizzou, and everyone who supported me throughout the recruiting process,” Cook wrote in his announcement. “But after deep reflection and talking with my family, I’ve decided that Ohio State is the best place for me to grow as a quarterback, compete at the highest level, and chase a national championship.”
Cook’s commitment instantly strengthens Ohio State’s already top-tier 2025 recruiting class, which is now ranked No. 2 nationally behind Georgia. He joins a loaded offensive haul that includes five-star WR Donovan Griggs and four-star OT Marcus Lang. Head Coach Ryan Day, known for his quarterback whisperer reputation, now adds another elite weapon to his future arsenal.
For Missouri, the loss is a tough pill to swallow. Cook was not only an in-state recruit but a potential face-of-the-program quarterback for years to come. With his departure, the Tigers will have to pivot quickly to their remaining QB targets and may explore the transfer portal as well to stabilize the position.
Notre Dame and Penn State—both believed to be strong contenders for Cook throughout his recruitment—were also caught off guard. Notre Dame had hoped to lure him with their new offensive scheme and strong quarterback tradition, while Penn State emphasized early playing time and strong NIL backing. But ultimately, neither could match the combination of exposure, development, and national title potential offered by Ohio State.
As one recruiting analyst put it: “Ohio State just landed their quarterback of the future. This is a program-defining flip. And for Missouri—it’s back to the drawing board.”
Brady Cook is now expected to enroll early at Ohio State in January 2026 and compete for playing time as soon as his freshman year.
