End of an Era: Coach Dennis Gate Announces Resignation from Missouri Tigers Basketball After Accepting $51 Million Deal from Louisville Cardinals

COLUMBIA, Mo. — April 19, 2025

In a move that has stunned the college basketball world, Dennis Gates has officially announced his resignation as head coach of the Missouri Tigers men’s basketball program after accepting a record-breaking $51 million deal to become the new head coach of the Louisville Cardinals.

Gates, who had been at the helm of the Missouri Tigers since 2022, will step down immediately, closing a remarkable chapter that saw him revive and re-energize a once-dormant program. The 45-year-old coach made the announcement Friday afternoon during an emotional press conference at Mizzou Arena.

“It’s incredibly difficult to say goodbye to a place that has meant so much to me and my family,” Gates said. “Missouri gave me the platform to build, to lead, and to dream big. I will always be grateful for the love and support I’ve received from this community. But the opportunity to take on a new challenge at Louisville was something I couldn’t pass up.”

The contract, reportedly worth $51 million over seven years, makes Gates one of the highest-paid coaches in college basketball and signals a massive investment by the Louisville program as it looks to return to national prominence.

Gates’ departure leaves Missouri at a crossroads. After years of inconsistency prior to his arrival, Gates brought new life to the program. In just three seasons, he led the Tigers to two NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 run in 2024, their deepest tournament performance in over a decade. His recruiting prowess and player development also helped Missouri compete at a high level in the fiercely competitive SEC.

Missouri Athletic Director Desireé Reed-Francois expressed both admiration and disappointment in the wake of the announcement.

“We are deeply thankful to Coach Gates for everything he has done for Mizzou basketball,” Reed-Francois said. “He brought passion, vision, and success to our program. While we’re sad to see him go, we understand the magnitude of this opportunity and wish him nothing but the best in this next chapter.”

Gates’ move to Louisville comes at a crucial time for the Cardinals, who have struggled to regain their footing in recent years. Following a string of losing seasons and coaching instability, the program is betting big on Gates to restore its proud basketball tradition. Louisville’s athletic director, Josh Heird, described Gates as “the perfect leader to guide this program back to where it belongs—among the elite.”

Known for his calm demeanor, intellectual approach, and emphasis on culture and discipline, Gates has earned respect across the basketball landscape. A former assistant under Leonard Hamilton at Florida State, Gates is considered one of the brightest coaching minds in the game. His ability to connect with players, both on and off the court, has made him a favorite among fans and athletes alike.

While the future remains uncertain for Missouri basketball, Gates’ impact on the program will not be forgotten. His efforts helped reestablish Mizzou as a competitive force and restored pride to the fan base.

As for what comes next, speculation is already swirling about potential successors. Assistant coach Charlton Young, a longtime Gates collaborator, is rumored to be among the top candidates to fill the vacancy.

In his closing remarks, Gates emphasized his continued love for Missouri and the people who supported him.

“Mizzou will always be a part of me. I’m proud of what we accomplished here, and I’ll be rooting for this program from afar,” Gates said. “Now, I look forward to the challenge ahead, and I’m excited to build something special in Louisville.”

Indeed, an era has come to an end in Columbia—but for Dennis Gates, the journey is far from over.
