After blocking for Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott on an incomplete pass to Brandin Cooks, Smith instantly grabbed his left foot. Eventually, he hobbled off the field and into the medical tent on the sidelines.
With a foot injury, the Cowboys listed Smith as questionable to return, according to Todd Archer of ESPN:
With a foot injury, Tyler Smith’s return is dubious. He’s not in his usual location, on the bench next to Tyron Smith. It’s T.J. Bass. Perhaps he is attempting to keep the foot free? Jourdan Lewis is now slowly getting up.
After a 10-play, 42-yard drive, Dallas tied the score at 10-10 with a 51-yard field goal from Brandon Aubrey.
Michael Badgley of the Lions then drove to the Cowboys’ 7 before stalling and kicking a 30-yard field goal. Jameson Williams and Jared Goff connected for a 63-yard throw that set up the field goal.
Smith had sustained injuries for Dallas this season before this foot ailment. He also suffered a hamstring injury during a Cowboys practice prior to Week 1. Although he had an MRI, the damage wasn’t thought to be very bad.
Smith was selected by the Cowboys in the first round of the previous season, and he started all 17 games as a rookie. He played a significant role in an offensive line that allowed just 27 sacks the previous season, ranking fourth in the league.
With less than 30 seconds remaining, the Lions scored a touchdown, but their 2-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, and the Cowboys emerged victorious, 20-19.
