Good News: Wigan Warriors Give Coach Matt Peet Long-Term Contract Extension After Historic Success

In a move that has delighted fans and solidified the club’s long-term ambitions, Wigan Warriors have announced a major contract extension for head coach Matt Peet, keeping him at the helm until at least the end of the 2030 season. This decision follows an extraordinary run of success that has firmly re-established Wigan as a dominant force in rugby league, both domestically and internationally.

Peet, who first took over as head coach in 2021, has transformed Wigan into a powerhouse of consistency, excellence, and silverware. Since stepping into the role, he has led the club to multiple major honors, including the Betfred Challenge Cup in 2022, the Super League Grand Final in 2023, and most recently, a dramatic victory in the World Club Challenge against Australian champions Penrith Panthers in early 2024.

The announcement of his long-term deal—along with assistant coaches Sean O’Loughlin and Tommy Leuluai—marks one of the most stable and ambitious coaching structures in Super League history. All three have signed contracts through to 2030, underlining the club’s belief in their leadership, vision, and ability to continue delivering at the highest level.

Wigan Warriors’ Chief Executive, Kris Radlinski, described the decision as “the easiest one we’ve had to make,” citing the coaching team’s outstanding preparation, leadership, and rapport with the playing group. The club conducted a thorough internal review following their pre-season training camp in Portugal and unanimously concluded that extending the trio’s contracts was a strategic priority.

Peet, a lifelong Wigan supporter who began his coaching journey with the club’s academy, expressed his gratitude and pride in continuing to lead the team. “To coach Wigan is an honor. The chance to work with people I admire, in a town I love, is something I never take for granted,” Peet said. “What makes this job special is the people – our players, staff, and fans. I’m committed to doing all I can to make them proud.”

Under Peet’s leadership, Wigan have become known for their discipline, tactical intelligence, and youth development. His collaborative coaching style, built on mutual respect and shared values, has resonated deeply with players and fans alike. Both O’Loughlin and Leuluai, who had legendary playing careers with Wigan, have seamlessly transitioned into coaching roles, adding experience and a winning mentality to the backroom team.

This contract extension comes on the back of a historic 2023–24 season, where Wigan achieved a rare rugby league “quadruple”: the League Leaders’ Shield, Super League title, Challenge Cup, and World Club Challenge. Such a feat has never been accomplished by a Super League side in a single calendar year before, earning Peet widespread acclaim. He was also named Coach of the Year by the Sports Journalists’ Association—another indication of his impact on the sport.

In addition to results on the field, the club has praised Peet’s work in building a strong team culture and developing homegrown talent. Wigan’s youth pipeline continues to produce elite players, many of whom have flourished under Peet’s guidance.

As rugby league continues to evolve, Wigan Warriors’ decision to lock in their coaching staff long-term is both a statement of intent and a nod to tradition. Stability, vision, and success are at the heart of this decision—values deeply rooted in the club’s identity.

For Wigan fans, this news brings optimism for the future. With Peet and his team steering the ship, the Warriors look set to challenge for honors both at home and abroad for years to come. The road ahead is long, but the foundations have been laid for another golden era in Wigan’s proud history.
