Earth, Wind & Fire, formed in 1969 by the late Maurice White, has sold over 90 million records worldwide, earning six Grammy Awards and 11 consecutive gold or platinum albums. Hits like “September,” “Shining Star,” and “Let’s Groove” continue to resonate with audiences across generations.(Black Enterprise, Stairway to 11)
Questlove, known for his Oscar-winning documentary “Summer of Soul,” brings his deep appreciation for music history to this project. He expressed his personal connection to the band, stating, “Having been baptized in the Afrocentric joy river of this powerhouse unit, I’ve learned about them, I’ve learned about us & more importantly, I’ve learned and rediscovered myself in the process.” He aims to present a narrative that delves into the band’s journey of “Soul, Self & Struggle,” highlighting their resilience and cultural significance.(NME, Stairway to 11, WBLS)
The documentary will feature unprecedented access to Earth, Wind & Fire’s archives, including visual, audio, and written materials. With the full support of Maurice White’s estate and current band members Philip Bailey, Verdine White, and Ralph Johnson, the film is poised to be a definitive account of the band’s legacy. In a joint statement, the members expressed their enthusiasm: “We look forward to this in-depth journey of our band, and are so excited to have Questlove directing the documentary.”(Stairway to 11, Relix Media)
Produced in collaboration with Sony Music Vision, RadicalMedia, Broken Halo Entertainment, and Kinfolk Management + Media, the documentary is financed by Fifth Season. Mary Lisio, EVP of Non-Scripted Development & Production at Fifth Season, remarked, “This is an incredibly exciting opportunity to give audiences unfettered access to one of the most successful and culturally meaningful music groups in history.”(Black Enterprise, Relix Media)
As fans eagerly await the film’s release, this documentary promises to be a heartfelt tribute to Earth, Wind & Fire’s enduring influence and a celebration of their contributions to the tapestry of global music.
