The midfielder is in high demand this summer, with La Liga giants renewing their January interest.
Celtic are reportedly “open” to negotiating the sale of Matt O’Riley to Atletico Madrid this summer.
However, the La Liga heavyweights have been warned that they would have to pay more than their January bid to sign the 23-year-old this summer. The Scottish Premiership champions were approached by Atletico about a move for O’Riley in January but declined due to a focus on the end-of-season run-in, but the Spanish club is claimed to still be interested in the Celtic star this summer.
According to Mundo Deportivo, O’Riley and Feyenoord player Matts Wieffer are “on the agenda” again this summer, building on their interest in January. According to reports, the offer made to Celtic was €20 million (£17 million), and the club did not want to lose a “key piece of their team unless the offer was high, which it was not.”
According to reports, the Hoops have told Atletico that any deal will only be approved if the offer is increased this summer. O’Riley is claimed to have originally captured Diego Simeone’s attention during their Champions League group stage match against the Hoops last season, and the manager has remained a fan since.
Atletico are also thought to be in negotiations with Feyenoord about signing Wieffer. It is expected that the club will only sign one of O’Riley and the Dutch international.
O’Riley scored 19 goals and assisted 18 times across all competitions last season, and his value has skyrocketed in recent months, with Transfermarkt claiming that O’Riley is currently the most valuable player EVER to play in the Premiership despite missing out on the European Championships. O’Riley’s excellent performances domestically and in the Champions League have increased his current market value to €20 million, but Celtic appear to want considerably more for their star player.
