Brentford manager Thomas Frank has downplayed speculation connecting him with a move to Manchester United, but says he is ‘flattered’ by the reports.
After only one win in his last eight Premier League games, manager Erik ten Hag is under mounting pressure at Old Trafford and might be fired at the conclusion of the season.
Back-to-back defeats have dropped them to eighth position in the table, and they could miss out on European qualification for next season.
A fresh name has arisen, with The Telegraph claiming this week that Frank may also be in the running, thanks in part to his previous friendship with Ineos CEO Sir Dave Brailsford, who is playing a key role behind the scenes.
Frank, on the other hand, claims that he is happy and settled at Brentford and has no plans to leave the west London club anytime soon, even if United comes calling.
When asked about the new links with United, Frank told Danish tabloid Bold: ‘I’m really pleased where I am.
‘It is close to being the perfect club to be at. I can see myself being here for many more years.’
He continued: ‘I am close to the owner, to the sports director, everyone around the club. Brentford is a club where I really feel at home.’
When asked how it feels to be associated with such a major job, Frank replied: “First and foremost, I think it is flattering and a recognition of the work I’ve done.”
New minority owners Ineos are said to be considering their options, with England manager Gareth Southgate and former Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel among those in the running to replace Ten Hag if United pull the trigger.
‘And I’m glad that others are noticing the work we are doing at Brentford. But, having said that, what goes on at Brentford is not a one-man show.’
Probed on whether there was any interest from Liverpool before they opted for Arne Slot, Frank added: ‘I am not going to comment on all the rumours. You shouldn’t believe everything you read in the newspaper.’
Brentford has struggled slightly this season after two great Premier League campaigns, as they currently lie 16th in the table, 13 points above the relegation zone.
Despite missing Ivan Toney – who, incidentally, has been pursued by United to boost their frontline – for half of the season, they still scored 54 goals, which is more than United has achieved.
