That was a tough watch last night. Scotland was ripped apart by a more efficient and effective German team. They had the superior players, and it showed as they dominated us throughout the entire game.
In all honesty, it could have been seven or eight, and the Scottish players simply sat back and watched. The performance was both embarrassing and painful.
It didn’t help that we had Ally McCoist providing commentary. As much as our eyes ached from watching that plodding spectacle, our ears were thumping from his inane rambling. It’s bizarre how someone can claim to be the finest pundit on the air.
Yes, he is supposed to be neutral, but he exhibited no patriotism and spent the entire game rambling on about how terrific the Germans are. To the audience, it sounded as if Ally was taking tremendous pleasure in our misery.
For crying out loud, the dude is a former Scotland international. You can bet your life we wouldn’t be doing it if we were in England being educated. He does have a career to preserve, I suppose.
Even more terrible was the attitude of his former employer, Graeme Souness, who was in the studio. A former Scotland captain who, like Ally, displayed little patriotism and appeared unconcerned about the outcome.
In fact, Irishman Roy Keane shown more emotion and disappointment than Souness.
Souness became more emotional when he targeted our own Callum McGregor in a blistering attack, describing him as “the Celtic captain yet again”. Why didn’t he call out Andy Roberson, who was just as responsible for our performance last night as ‘the Liverpool Champions League champion’.
That’s because Souness is a bitter old guy courting popularity with the element of Scotland that will have taken glee in Scotland’s 5-1 defeat to Germany and will cheer England on when they face Serbia. The truth is that Souness and McCoist were as embarrassing as the guys on the pitch last night.
And now for Steve Clarke’s insane tactical strategy. Oh, dear.
