Celtic has responded to former Rangers manager Graeme Souness’ comments about Callum McGregor at Euro 2024.
Following Scotland’s defeat to Germany in the first group game, Souness singled out the Celtic skipper for his performance, comments that were thought highly harsh by Celtic fans and former Hoops hero Peter Grant.
McGregor also replied to the criticism, stating that he had taken it personally and that he would use Souness’ words to show him wrong.
In an attempt to defend himself, Souness dug a deeper hole when he revealed on talkSPORT why he referred to McGregor as ‘the Celtic captain’, saying, “I couldn’t recall his name. But I knew he was Celtic’s captain.
“I have to say, that question can only arise in the west of Scotland. I forgot his name, I couldn’t remember his name but I knew he was a good little football player and if it’s been taken as a slant or criticism, I didn’t mean it. I genuinely forgot his name.”
Celtic responded to Souness’ criticisms with a brilliant tweet on X, taking aim at the Euro 2024 commentator immediately following the Hoops captain’s appearance in Scotland’s opener against Switzerland.
McGregor performed well for Scotland in the 1-1 draw against Switzerland, and the Celtic captain hopes to assist Steve Clarke’s team qualify from the group with a win over Hungary, which has already been eliminated.
With the last group game to be played on Sunday, the Celtic captain, together with Anthony Ralston, Greg Taylor, and James Forrest, might help create history for Scotland.
Not only are all four triple legends at club level, but they have the potential to become Tartan Army legends if they can guide the Dark Blues to the Euro 2024 knockout stages.
