Brendan Rodgers’ return to Celtic sparked some questions among football pundits and Parkhead supporters.
When Ange Postecoglou left for Tottenham Hotspur, there appeared to be only one guy in the running for the Celtic manager’s job, and Dermot Desmond made sure that happened.
Brendan Rodgers was appointed as Celtic manager on June 19, 2023, and it’s safe to say that the appointment divided views among fans.
We already know why, so there’s no need to go into detail. Rodgers returned with the goal of keeping the league title and enhancing our European standing.
The Irishman has accomplished one of those goals, and it is reasonable to suppose that he has won over many of his critics this season.
While I would never claim to speak for all Celtic fans, the broad consensus among forums and online discussions is that Rodgers has the support of the majority of Celtic fans.
So, when BBC analyst Rory Smith said that the relationship between Celtic fans and Rodgers was ‘loveless,’ Chris Sutton promptly refuted it.
Sutton told [The Monday Night Club], “I think you’re miles off when you say it’s loveless.” It’s the antithesis of that. I believe winning is the most important thing.
“Brendan coming back was, whatever anybody says, was a risk. But he came back to prove a point and that was courageous.
“He could have gone off to Saudi Arabia, jobs down south and I’m sure he could have gone to a lot of places in Europe.
“His reputation speaks for itself. So there is that but him coming back and the environment up here, I take my hat off to him for that.”
While some Celtic fans are still sceptical of Rodgers, claiming that his relationship with all of the supporters is ‘loveless’ is simply absurd.
While those who continue to have misgivings are more than welcome to do so, winning the league and Scottish Cup double would help soothe some of the animosity that still exists among some fans.
