Graeme Souness admits there is a “gulf” between Rangers and Celtic during the Old Firm game on Saturday (11 May), but insists there isn’t much between the two teams.
The Gers were given a crushing blow in their campaign for the Scottish Premiership title as the Hoops won 2-1 at Celtic Park, taking a six-point lead at the top of the league.
With only one win in their last 11 meetings, Jim White stated that there is still a “gulf” between the two Scottish rivals, prompting Souness to urge the Ibrox management to make finances available.
On Monday (13 May, 11:12am), the former Ibrox star told talkSPORT: “There is a gulf. They’re ahead of the Rangers. How do you expect me to respond to this question? I’m attempting to provide some data to back up my reasoning.
“If Rangers go and win at Hampden Park, there are three trophies to win and Rangers would win two of them. But, of course, the most important one is the league.
“The new manager has done a fabulous job, I think. He’s been there for six or seven months and has signed three players, with two on loan and £4.3million spent on [Mohamed] Diomande.
“I’m hoping, in this window, the club find some dosh to support him and he can get some players in that he knows and trusts, which can make a difference in the league next year. I would not be critical of the manager or the players right now.
“They slipped up badly at Ross County and slipped up badly at Dundee, which is why it all came down to Saturday’s game that they lost. That hurts.”
Graeme Souness backs Philippe Clement to close Rangers gulf on Celtic
It’s difficult to argue that there is currently a gap between Rangers and Celtic, whether it’s due to offensive quality, defensive qualities, managerial experience, or anything else.
However, since Clement’s hiring in October, the Gers have already demonstrated promising results and appear to be going forward.
Clement has already instilled trust at Ibrox and has the potential to deliver the Glasgow squad great success if they stick with him.
This will be clear if the Ibrox side can defeat their opponents at Hampden Park to win the Scottish Cup and beat Celtic for the first time this season.
The Belgian must be supported throughout the summer transfer window if Rangers are to win their second Scottish Premiership title in a decade. This will assist the Gers in closing the aforementioned “gulf”.
