With his most recent comments, Celtic custodian Benjamin Siegrist has all but cemented his departure from the club this summer.
The stopper, who has only made two competitive appearances for the Hoops, was generally anticipated to leave in the coming weeks, and his recent statements have further reinforced that belief.
Signed on a free transfer from Dundee United two summers ago, the 32-year-old was drafted in as a backup who could perhaps push Joe Hart for the number one shirt.
However, under Brendan Rodgers, he ended up being a third choice, with Scott Bain ahead of him in the pecking order.
Siegrist is planning to migrate this summer after falling in love with Australian radio broadcaster Brittany Hockley. He confessed that, while he does not want to retire yet, when he does, he wants to do so in his partner’s birthplace.
He said (Blick via RecordSport): “After my last day at work, I’ll leave as soon as possible. And I’ll never come back here (to Celtic). No. I’m going to retire there (Australia). But not yet. Britt has already indicated that she could do her podcast from Europe. We’re excited.”
Siegrist is among numerous fringe players who will leave Celtic this summer. Brendan Rodgers already has a number of places in the team to strengthen, but the Swiss stopper’s confirmation of his leaving highlights the necessity for one, if not two, goalkeepers to be signed.
