During Turkey’s 2-1 quarter-final win over Austria, some fans attacked Arda Guler and Marcel Sabitzer.
Merih Demiral scored twice for Turkey, including one in the first minute, while Michael Gregoritsch equalized for Austria in a tense finish..
Turkey goalkeeper Mert Gunok pulled off an unbelievable save in the 94th minute to deny Christoph Baumgartner, drawing comparisons to Gordon Banks.
Vincenzo Montella’s side held on to set up a quarter final against the Netherlands on Saturday evening.
Unfortunately, as has been the case throughout the tournament, multiple objects were once thrown onto the pitch from the crowd.
Real Madrid starlet Guler and former Manchester United loanee Sabitzer were both in the firing line.
Guler did not appear to be directly hit by anything, but multiple cups and various other objects were thrown in his direction as he prepared to take the corner that was eventually headed home by Demiral to double Turkey’s lead.
After seeing the ball hit the net, 19-year-old Guler then turned towards the crowd and cupped his ear, which lead to more objects being thrown towards him.
Sabitzer – who scored three goals in 18 appearances for Man United in the 2022/23 campaign while on loan from Borussia Dorrmund – was later struck on the side of the head by a coin as he was preparing to take a corner.
Luckily for Sabitzer – and UEFA, whose security standards during this summer’s Euros have been widely criticised – no serious damage appeared to be done.
Objects were also thrown onto the field during Tuesday’s earlier game.
In the encounter between Romania and the Netherlands, a pair of trainers were curiously thrown into the pitch, nearly preventing Donyell Malen from scoring.
Florian Nita, Romania’s goalkeeper, knocked one of the sneakers away before Malen cut inside and fired home, narrowly missing the other free shoe.
