Former Liverpool player Jack Robinson embroiled in a first-half incident with Everton attacker Dominic Calvert-Lewin during Sheffield United’s defeat.
Chris Wilder downplayed his captain Jack Robinson’s altercation with former Blade Dominic Calvert-Lewin during Sheffield United’s defeat to Everton this afternoon. On their final visit to Goodison Park, the demoted Blades were defeated 1-0 by Abdoulaye DoucourĂ©’s first-half header from a Calvert-Lewin cross.
However, the first-half flashpoint occurred between the former United striker and Robinson, who slammed Calvert-Lewin to the ground, resulting in a mini-melee between the two sets of players. Referee Stuart Attwell showed the United captain a yellow card; VAR did not alter the decision, and play proceeded.
Calvert-Lewin was also booked for his involvement in the incident, while Doucouré intervened before protesting to Attwell after receiving a response from Robinson and his United colleagues. Evertonians were outraged because former Liverpool player Robinson was not awarded a red card, although Wilder later said:
“I know it’ll be talked about, Jack’s little spat with Dom. I’ve got no issue with either player. They both want to win for their football clubs, and I’d like to think that Evertonians know their football as well and will understand that.
“They might have seen that in a situation or two over the years. You support it when it’s your team and you look at it differently when it’s against, but at least he’s showing some fight and some desire to influence his team and get them going.
“I think it’s the correct decision but I know other people will think that in modern-day football, by the letter of the law, something else should have happened. But I’m glad the referee and the VAR took the sensible decision.”
United pushed and puffed but lacked the quality to draw level, with Cameron Archer missing a number of chances and Andre Brooks forcing Jordan Pickford to parry a shot in the first half.
