Chelsea have hired Enzo Maresca from Leicester as their next head coach, according to British media reports late Thursday. According to the Daily Telegraph, the Italian will join the Blues on a five-year contract with an option for another year, aimed to provide stability after two years of turmoil under the new government led by US billionaires Behdad Eghbali and Todd Boehly. Maresca, who was Pep Guardiola’s assistant at English champions Manchester City until last year, managed Leicester’s rapid return to the Premier League after relegation a year ago.
The 44-year-old Italian’s style of football is also thought to have impressed Chelsea bosses.
London club Chelsea were looking for a new manager after parting company with Mauricio Pochettino.
He was only in charge at Stamford Bridge for one season, while Brentford’s Thomas Frank and Kieran McKenna, who led Ipswich to top-flight promotion behind Leicester, have also been linked with the job.
Pochettino resigned after a late push saw Chelsea finish sixth in the Premier League, qualifying for the Europa Conference League but missing out on Champions League qualification and the trophy.
Chelsea lost the League Cup final 1-0 to Liverpool after extra time, and they pushed Manchester City all the way before losing the FA Cup semi-finals by the same score.
However, there were signs that former Tottenham manager Pochettino’s strategy was coming together during a run of five straight wins at the close of the season, ensuring Chelsea’s participation in European competition the following season.
