According to TeamTalk, newly promoted Ipswich Town have already made a significant statement of intent by securing the long-term future of in-demand head coach Kieran McKenna, and the Tractor Boys are now planning to make another eye-catching statement by targeting Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron.
According to the site, the Magpies are open to proposals for up to four new players as Eddie Howe looks to acquire finances to rebuild a Champions League-caliber club.
Almiron was a key part of that success the previous season, and the former club record signing scored a stunning 11 goals in the 2022/23 season, the most of which came during a productive period in October.
At his peak, the Paraguayan was lauded for his hard workrate, incredible pace, and ability to cut inside with his left foot and occasionally produce magical moments.
However, in recent years, those moments have been few and far between, and reports at the close of the January transfer season indicated that Newcastle were open to proposals from Saudi Arabia, with Al Shabab apparently bidding £17 million for the winger.
That move fell through due to Howe’s £30 million valuation of the player and Newcastle’s squad’s injuries, with Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy both ailing at the time.
According to TeamTalk, the Magpies have reduced their asking price to £21 million, which has piqued the interest of Ipswich, who are looking to rebuild a club capable of competing in the top flight in their first season in 22 years.
According to transfer guru Ben Jacobs, McKenna is looking for players with Premier League experience to boost their cause, and Almiron, who has 177 top-flight games in Black and White, could be the answer.
He said: “I’m told that there is Premier League interest in Almiron as well and Ipswich may be one to watch. Ipswich’s number one priority would be to bring in Omari Hutchison from Chelsea, but you just don’t know, things could change,” Jacobs said.
“With Almiron and Ipswich, that one is one to watch.”
If Almiron is declared surplus to requirements next season, the East Anglia side is expected to face new competition from Saudi Arabia and Spanish club Atletico Madrid.
