The Magpies are close to making their second signing of the summer transfer window.
Lloyd Kelly, a Bournemouth defender, is expected to become Newcastle United’s second signing of the summer, as his transfer to St James’ Park nears completion. Kelly is available for free transfer after the Cherries stated he will depart the club when his contract expires at the end of this month.
Kelly is poised to leave the south coast for the northeast and reconnect with former manager Eddie Howe on a free transfer. Kelly, who can play either centre-back or left-back, made 25 appearances in all competitions for Bournemouth last season under Andoni Iraola.
Fabrizio Romano took to X to provide an update on Kelly’s projected move to Newcastle United, writing: “Newcastle have completed verbal agreement to sign Lloyd Kelly as a free agent from Bournemouth, here we go confirmed!” Kelly’s status as a Newcastle player has always been clear, with a medical to follow. Exclusive detail: deal will be good until June 2028.
After missing out on Tosin Adarabioyo, who chose to join Chelsea despite being close to a deal with Newcastle, Kelly will join Newcastle to bring Premier League experience in defence and competition for Dan Burn and Lewis Hall. Hall, meanwhile, is expected to have his permanent move to the club announced soon after spending last season on loan from Chelsea.
The summer transfer window opens on Friday, June 14 and runs for 11 weeks, ending on Friday, August 30. This summer, Newcastle United were also highly connected with Burnley custodian James Trafford.
