Kieran Trippier joined Newcastle United in January 2022 after spending two and a half years at Atletico Madrid. He considers Diego Simeone to be the best manager he has worked under, rather than Eddie Howe.
Newcastle United paid £12 million for the right-back two and a half years ago, making him the club’s first signing under Saudi ownership. This marked the end of his affiliation with Atletico Madrid and its fiery Argentine boss, Simeone.
Trippier took a risk by leaving Tottenham Hotspur, where he became a regular for England and one of Europe’s greatest fullbacks. The Three Lions star won La Liga in 2020-21 and admits he improved defensively under Simeone.
Trippier joined Newcastle United out of a desire to return home, despite the fact that he traded Champions League play for a relegation battle. Since then, the 33-year-old has guided Newcastle to safety, qualified for the Champions League, and led the team to a Carabao Cup final.
He joins Anthony Gordon, another Newcastle player, in England’s roster for the forthcoming Euro 2024 campaign. However, transfer rumours abound, with sources claiming Trippier might be the next high-profile talent to move to Saudi Arabia.
Speaking with Gary Neville ahead of the competition, Trippier picked the finest manager he has ever worked for. He told The Overlap, “I’d say Simeone.” “Sorry, Eddie!”
The Newcastle United star also chose St James’ Park as the finest stadium he has played in.
That accolade was bestowed upon a stadium that played host to one of Tottenham’s most memorable games.
“I think Ajax, that’s up there,” Trippier added. “Certainly when we played there with Tottenham, when we came back to 3-3 (Champions League semi-final 2019). I don’t know if that’s just because of the occasion because what a night that was.”
