With speculations claiming that Newcastle United would lose out on Benjamin Sesko, it begs the question of where Eddie Howe will look for his next striker.
According to journalist Craig Hope, nowhere yet.
The Daily Mail correspondent appeared on Sky Sports News’ Back Pages Tonight show on Wednesday and stated that a striker is not Eddie Howe’s top priority, with right-wing being a more pressing concern.
That is not to say Howe isn’t looking for a new striker, but he’s unlikely to push hard for one at the start of the window.
Speaking about one specific target, Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, in whom Newcastle is reportedly interested, Hope says he doesn’t see it happening, with Howe preferring to keep Callum Wilson rather than spend £60 million on the 27-year-old England international.
“I think Eddie Howe’s preference is to try and keep Callum Wilson this summer.
“He sees a greater need elsewhere in the squad, notably right-wing, perhaps a new goalkeeper and centre-halves as well.
“I’d be surprised [if Newcastle do sign Calvert-Lewin]. Eddie Howe does like Calvert-Lewin. They have enquired about him before in previous windows. This story dropped last week. My information then was ‘yes he’s on a list, but he’s not top of that list and it wouldn’t be a priority’.”
We honestly don’t know how we feel about this.
While we were never very enthused by the Calvert-Lewin connection, it did indicate that we were searching for a striker. We have nothing against keeping Callum Wilson, but if we don’t bring in another forward to move ahead of him in the pecking order, what are we doing?
We know Howe is loyal to the players he likes, arguably to a fault, but we are frightened of going into this season with only Callum Wilson as Alexander Isak’s backup again.
Fortunately, there is still a long way to go before the season begins, and the transfer window will open in a fortnight. Take a breath in. And then out. In. And out.
