Newcastle are in negotiations with a former Chelsea player and a Serie A winner about their possible return to the Premier League.
Newcastle United have begun talks with Fikayo Tomori’s representatives about a potential transfer, according to a fresh report.
The Magpies are looking to improve their defence following the long-term absences of Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles, who may not return until next year.
According to Football Insider, St James’ Park authorities are eager to assess the England international’s interest in returning to the Premier League for the forthcoming season.
Tomori has spent the last three years at AC Milan, having moved from Chelsea in 2021 for £25 million, and his contract with the Italian club expires in 2027.
Newcastle will conclude their agreement for Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth when the versatile defender’s contract expires at the end of this month, but they will still try to acquire another centre-back to enhance their squad, with the 26-year-old Tomori being a good fit.
Tomori has established himself as a regular starter for AC Milan since his arrival. He played an important role in the club’s Serie A victory in 2021-22 and has made 142 appearances in total. Last season, he appeared in 32 of 35 games and played the entire 90 minutes in both of Milan’s Champions League meetings against Newcastle.
Despite starting in an England friendly against Australia last October, Gareth Southgate did not select Tomori for this summer’s Euro 2024.
It is not the first time the defender has been linked with a return to the Premier League; ties to Manchester United and former club Chelsea emerged last year.
Indeed, Kelly was the club’s first signing of the window, having made 23 Premier League games previous season as Bournemouth finished 12th with their highest top-flight point total.
