According to Italian sources, Newcastle United midfielder Joe Willock could soon be reunited with one of his old Arsenal colleagues.
Joe Willock has pushed his game to the next level since leaving Arsenal for Newcastle United, with the 24-year-old receiving the regular first-team minutes he need to really move on.
Willock had a difficult season in 2023/24, making only 14 of 51 appearances due to injuries. But the hope is that he will be ready for pre-season, as he looks to make up for missed time in black and white.
According to Italian sources, he may soon be joined by a former Arsenal teammate.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Newcastle United is one of two Premier League clubs interested in signing Matteo Guendouzi from Lazio, with Aston Villa.
According to reports, Aston Villa has already made a £21 million offer for the Frenchman, and the Magpies are also expressing interest.
Gazzetta dello Sport adds that while Lazio wish to keep him, an offer of around £25 million could persuade them to sell.
Guendouzi, who played alongside Willock at Arsenal and was described as a youngster with ‘big potential’ by Arsene Wenger, is an unusual target for Newcastle.
However, reports of the 25-year-old coming to Tyneside are not new. He was linked with a move to Newcastle United about a year ago, and his name came up as a potential target for the Magpies shortly after the takeover in 2021.
On both times, it seems unusual to see Guendouzi associated with Newcastle, and it will be more stranger in 2024.
That is because Eddie Howe does not need another centre-midfielder, since the Newcastle manager will have seven to choose from next season.
The only way this can alter is if someone leaves, which is a possibility. Sean Longstaff has been linked with a transfer to Leicester City, but the main problem is Bruno Guimaraes and his £100 million release clause.
If one of those players leaves, the reports about Guendouzi heading to Newcastle may make more sense. Until then, they make no sense at all.
