The 2023/24 season was one of Newcastle United’s most injury-plagued in recent memory.
Last season, Newcastle led the Premier League in most days missed due to injury by a significant margin, and everyone was hopeful that the end of the season would bring an end to their poor luck.
With Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman already on the long-term absentee list following ACL surgery, Lewis Miley is likely to join them.
Eddie Howe opted to end Lewis Miley’s season early after the teenager sustained an injury on international service. The call was made to ensure Miley had enough time to rehabilitate and was not put back into a situation that could aggravate his back ailment, causing other problems down the road.
While that may have helped the 17-year-old budding star’s back, he now has a metatarsal ailment.
According to the Chronicle, MIley will have surgery in London for the injury and will be sidelined for 12 weeks, missing the full of preseason and the first six weeks of the Premier League season.
Eddie Howe will be disappointed after selling Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest, as he will now be two central midfielders short ahead of the new season.
Fortunately, Sandro Tonali will return to action for the third game of the season after completing his 10-month ban, and Joe Willock should also be back to full fitness.
Also, there is still a lot of time left in the transfer window, with central midfielders still being linked to the club, though we expect Sean Longstaff to be sold before we attempt to bring in any more players in that position.
It’s a major setback for Miley, who received high plaudits for his performances last season when an injury crisis forced him into the starting lineup for more games than he or Eddie Howe expected.
