Nottingham Forest are now embroiled in a massive argument with the Premier League and PGMOL about referee nominations in the top tier.
During Nottingham Forest’s defeat to Manchester City at the City Ground, Sky Sports analyst Peter Drury took aim at the club and its referee consultant Mark Clattenburg.
During the first half, the stadium cameras panned to the directors’ box. Initially, they chose Clattenburg, who has been advising the club on rules, before moving on to Reds icon John McGovern.
As the coverage focused on the two guys, Drury used the chance to make a not-so-subtle dig at Forest for their current concerns with the Premier League and PGMOL. “Well, Mark Clattenburg has made a headline or two this week,” he said.
“A very, very fine Premier League referee in his time, who like all of them once in a while made a mistake. And there is the great John McGovern, from an era at this great, great football club when the referee was always right.”
Last week, Clattenburg questioned why Forest were not awarded three penalties in their Premier League defeat to Everton. The East Midlands club issued a statement following the match, challenging the PGMOL’s decision to assign Stuart Attwell as a VAR official despite his backing for relegation rivals Luton.
The Premier League has already dismissed these claims, announcing that an investigation into the Twitter message is underway. Forest fans expressed their feelings about the Premier League during Sunday’s loss to City.
When the Premier League anthem was performed prior to kickoff, both sets of supporters were heard booing it. Several times, Forest fans were heard chanting: “Premier League, corrupt as f***,” sending a clear message to the top flight.
