he Texas Longhorns overcame the ACC champion Clemson Tigers in round one of the College Football Playoff. Now comes a new challenge: the Cinderella story of this NCAA football season, the Big 12 Conference champion Arizona State Sun Devils.

Arizona State has an imposing running game led by Cam Skattebo, an intriguing matchup for the strong Texas defense. However, debate continues to rage over how the fifth-seeded Longhorns can get more out of their offense against the fourth-seeded Sun Devils: should head coach Steve Sarkisian keep the faith with redshirt junior Quinn Ewers, or should he gamble on highly-touted redshirt freshman Arch Manning?

As Texas hunts for its first national championship since 2005, fans are “suggesting” that Sarkisian mix things up for the Peach Bowl against Arizona State — a contest that serves as one of the four CFP quarterfinal matchups.

Manning’s role at Texas under Sarkisian puts him squarely in the spotlight because of his lineage. Arch’s uncles, Eli and Peyton, were not known for using their legs to extend a play; Arch’s best asset arguably is his speed, which is why he will come into the game on short-yardage rushing situations.

However, Arizona State may realize that bringing Arch into the game will mean Texas is preparing to execute a designed run play, and fans on social media remain unimpressed with Ewers as the quarterback — leading to calls to let Arch throw the ball and even run the offense in next Wednesday’s game.

Sarkisian though has been clear that Ewers is his guy for the remainder of Texas’ Playoff run, and Manning will have to make the most of his limited appearances before taking over QB1 duties in 2025 and beyond. That said, a coaching staff like the Longhorns’ staff could find innovative ways to utilize him in what should be a fascinating game against the Big 12 winners.
