Breaking News: “I’m Leaving But Promise to Return” – Head Coach Matt Peet Sends a Heartfelt Message to Wigan Warriors Team and Fans Amid Personal Decision
Wigan, UK – In an emotional and unexpected development, Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet has announced he will be stepping down from his position, citing personal reasons that require his full attention. While confirming his departure, Peet reassured fans and the club that this is not goodbye forever, but rather a temporary pause. His heartfelt message has sent shockwaves across the rugby league community, touching teammates, supporters, and rivals alike.
Peet, who led Wigan Warriors to Challenge Cup glory in 2022 and the Super League title in 2023, made the announcement in a special press conference at the DW Stadium earlier today. Fighting back emotion, he said: “This is one of the hardest decisions of my life. I’m stepping away from my duties as head coach due to personal matters that I can no longer put to the side. But let me be clear – I’m not saying goodbye to Wigan Warriors. I’m saying, ‘See you soon.’”
While Peet didn’t go into full detail about the reasons behind his decision, he expressed a deep need to focus on his family and personal wellbeing. “There are moments in life when you have to listen to your heart, and right now, my heart is telling me to take care of something more important than even rugby – my loved ones. I owe it to them and to myself to be present during this time,” he said.
Peet’s departure marks a significant moment for the club, as he has become a cornerstone of the team’s identity. His connection to Wigan runs deep. A local lad who rose through the club’s academy and coaching system, he became head coach in 2021 and quickly won over players and fans with his passion, honesty, and clear vision.
In a message directed to his players and fans, Peet added: “To the team – thank you for your trust, your fight, and your brotherhood. You’ve made every day as coach an honour. To the fans – your support means the world. I’ve heard every cheer, seen every banner, and felt every moment with you. I will be back. Wigan is my home, and always will be.”
The Wigan Warriors board expressed their full support for Peet’s decision. Chief Executive Kris Radlinski stated, “Matt’s integrity and commitment to this club are second to none. We stand by him in this decision and look forward to welcoming him back when the time is right. The door remains wide open.”
Assistant coaches are expected to take charge in the interim, with the club emphasizing continuity and stability.
As news spreads, tributes have poured in from across the rugby league world, with fans expressing both sadness and solidarity. While his absence will undoubtedly be felt, Matt Peet’s message leaves one thing clear: this chapter may be closing, but the story is far from over.
