BREAKING NEWS: Las Vegas Raiders Legend Howie Long Invests $3.6 Million to Transform House Into Shelter for Homeless Youth in Las Vegas
In a remarkable display of heart and leadership, NFL Hall of Famer and Las Vegas Raiders icon Howie Long has announced a personal investment of $3.6 million to convert a private estate into a shelter for homeless youth in the Las Vegas area. The project, which Long says was “a long time coming,” is already being hailed as one of the most meaningful charitable efforts tied to the NFL in recent years.
The shelter, to be named “Long House,” will be located just outside the Las Vegas city center and will serve as a safe haven for youth aged 16 to 24 who are experiencing homelessness or aging out of the foster care system. The initiative aims to provide not just a roof, but a comprehensive set of support services including education programs, job training, therapy, and life skills development.
Howie Long, who played his entire 13-year NFL career with the Raiders and has remained close to the organization and its community since the team’s move to Las Vegas, said the idea for the shelter came after multiple visits to local youth outreach centers over the past year.
“I saw kids — some not even 18 — sleeping in tents, under bridges, in alleyways,” Long said in an emotional press conference. “These kids don’t need pity. They need opportunity. They need support. And most importantly, they need a home.”
The $3.6 million investment will cover the purchase of the estate, renovations to convert it into a dorm-style facility with 40 beds, common areas, classrooms, and counseling offices, as well as the first year of operational costs. Long has partnered with Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth and other community-based organizations to ensure the shelter runs with experienced staff and long-term sustainability.
Raiders owner Mark Davis praised Long’s commitment, calling him “a true Raider through and through — tough, loyal, and committed to making a difference.”
“Howie could’ve just donated a check and walked away,” Davis said. “But instead, he’s rolling up his sleeves and building something that will change lives.”
The news was met with enthusiasm throughout the NFL community, with current and former players applauding the initiative. Long’s sons — Chris and Kyle Long, both former NFL players themselves and active in charitable causes — expressed pride in their father’s efforts, with Chris tweeting: “Proud son moment. Pop continues to lead by example.”
Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman also issued a statement, saying: “This is what leadership looks like. Howie Long is stepping up in a way that sets a new standard for civic responsibility.”
Construction on Long House is expected to be completed in early 2026. As the Raiders prepare for another season on the field, their longtime legend is proving that his legacy off the field may be even more impactful.
“Being a Raider means standing for something,” Long said. “And I stand with these kids — every single one of them.”
