BREAKING NEWS: OKC Thunder Star Luguentz Dort Invests $3.6 Million to Transform House Into Shelter for Homeless Youth in Oklahoma
Oklahoma City, OK — In a powerful and heartfelt move off the court, Oklahoma City Thunder defensive standout Luguentz Dort has made headlines by investing $3.6 million of his personal earnings to transform a large residential property into a fully functioning shelter for homeless youth in Oklahoma. This game-changing initiative comes in response to the growing homelessness crisis affecting young people across the state — and especially in urban areas like Oklahoma City.
Dort, known for his toughness on defense and relentless work ethic, has now become just as formidable a force in the fight against youth homelessness. In a press conference Tuesday morning, Dort stood alongside local officials and community leaders to unveil the “Safe Haven Youth Shelter,” a 20-bedroom facility equipped with a professional kitchen, recreational space, mental health counseling rooms, and job training resources.
“This is something that’s been close to my heart for a long time,” Dort said. “I know what it’s like to grow up with limited resources. I’ve seen too many young people end up on the streets with nowhere to turn. I just felt like I had to do something real — something lasting.”
Born and raised in Montreal, Canada, Dort himself comes from humble beginnings. His journey to NBA success has been one of resilience, discipline, and community support — values he says inspired this project. “I’ve been blessed, and I wanted to use what I’ve earned to give back in a way that truly changes lives,” Dort added.
According to the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, an estimated 4,000 youth in the state experience homelessness each year. Many face not only the dangers of life on the streets, but also trauma from abuse, neglect, or family rejection — particularly among LGBTQ+ youth. Dort’s new shelter aims to offer more than just a roof; it offers a foundation for a better future.
The $3.6 million investment covers the purchase and renovation of the 12,000-square-foot home, along with staff hiring, programming, and an operating fund for the first two years. The shelter will partner with local nonprofits like Pivot and the Homeless Alliance to ensure that wraparound services are available from the day youth walk in the door.
Thunder General Manager Sam Presti praised Dort’s action, calling it “one of the most selfless and impactful things we’ve seen from a player.” He continued, “Lu is a leader. What he’s doing sets an example for not just athletes, but for everyone in a position to help others.”
Local leaders are hopeful that this initiative will spark further investment into social infrastructure in the region. Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt commented, “This is a defining moment for our city. Lu Dort isn’t just making a donation — he’s building hope.”
The Safe Haven Youth Shelter is expected to open its doors this fall, with room for 30 residents at a time and access to 24/7 care. Dort says he plans to stay involved personally, visiting the shelter regularly and working with staff to mentor youth.
“This isn’t just charity,” Dort said. “This is a promise — to stand with the next generation, no matter where they’re starting from.”
With this act of generosity and compassion, Luguentz Dort has proven that true leadership extends far beyond the basketball court.
