BREAKING NEWS: Wout van Aert & Will Smith Invest $20 Million to Transform Mansion Into Shelter for Homeless and Underserved Communities
Los Angeles, CA — In a powerful and unexpected act of philanthropy, professional cyclist Wout van Aert and Hollywood icon Will Smith have joined forces to launch one of the most ambitious housing initiatives of the year. The duo announced Monday that they are investing $20 million to convert a sprawling Los Angeles estate into a state-of-the-art shelter for the homeless, less privileged youth, and displaced families.
The property, once a luxury mansion located in the Hollywood Hills, will be renamed “New Horizons Haven” and will serve as a safe and dignified space offering more than just a roof. The facility is set to provide transitional housing, mental health support, job training, childcare services, and educational resources for people trying to rebuild their lives.
“We didn’t want to just write a check and disappear,” said Will Smith during a press conference held on the grounds of the property. “This is about legacy. It’s about creating something sustainable, something rooted in love, dignity, and the belief that everyone deserves a second chance.”
Wout van Aert, who has long been involved in humanitarian efforts across Europe, said the idea emerged during a dinner conversation the two shared in early 2025.
“We started talking about how often wealth gets isolated in these massive properties, while just miles away, people are living in tents and cars,” van Aert said. “It didn’t sit right. We realized we could turn luxury into purpose.”
The 18-bedroom, 20,000-square-foot estate is currently undergoing renovations to create private family quarters, shared living spaces, and wellness areas. Plans include community gardens, therapy rooms, a digital learning center, and even a small cycling studio to promote health and community engagement.
What sets New Horizons Haven apart from many shelters, advocates say, is its holistic approach. A team of social workers, educators, and wellness experts has already been assembled, with programs designed to guide residents from crisis to stability.
“It’s not just about survival—it’s about empowerment,” said project director and social impact strategist Dr. Nia Martinez. “We’re working to break cycles of poverty and trauma with tools, healing, and real opportunities.”
Reaction on social media was swift and overwhelmingly positive. Thousands praised Smith and van Aert for their hands-on involvement and willingness to challenge conventional philanthropy. Celebrities such as LeBron James, Viola Davis, and Lewis Hamilton shared their support and offered to contribute to the initiative.
Critics have often pointed out the growing gap between Hollywood wealth and the increasing homelessness crisis in cities like Los Angeles. For many, this project feels like a direct and meaningful response.
“I don’t want applause,” Smith said. “I want a world where shelters like this don’t have to exist because everyone has what they need. Until then, we’ll do the work.”
New Horizons Haven is scheduled to open its doors by early 2026, with applications for its first residents being processed later this year.
