End of an Era: Coach John Hynes Announces Resignation from Minnesota Wild After Accepting $51 Million Deal from Toronto Maple Leafs
In a move that has stunned the hockey world, John Hynes has officially announced his resignation as head coach of the Minnesota Wild. The 49-year-old coach, who took over the Wild midway through the 2023-24 NHL season, will be heading north of the border after accepting a blockbuster $51 million deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The announcement marks the end of a brief but transformative tenure in Minnesota, and signals a bold new chapter for one of hockey’s most scrutinized franchises.
Hynes’ decision came just weeks after the Wild were eliminated from playoff contention in a tightly contested Central Division. Though his time in Minnesota was short, Hynes made an immediate impact. He stepped in during a turbulent stretch, following the dismissal of former coach Dean Evason, and managed to steady the team with a disciplined, defense-first system that reinvigorated the roster.
In a press conference on Friday morning, Hynes expressed both gratitude and emotion as he addressed the media.
“This was not an easy decision,” he said. “Minnesota gave me a great opportunity, and I’m proud of what we started here. The players, the staff, and the fans welcomed me, and I’ll always appreciate that. But at the end of the day, the opportunity in Toronto was one I simply couldn’t pass up — for my family and for my career.”
The $51 million deal offered by Toronto is reported to span seven years, making Hynes one of the highest-paid coaches in NHL history. The Maple Leafs, long plagued by playoff underachievement despite a star-studded roster, are clearly betting big on Hynes’ ability to instill structure, accountability, and postseason resilience.
Toronto President Brendan Shanahan and GM Brad Treliving released a joint statement welcoming Hynes to the organization:
“We believe John is the right leader to take this team to the next level. His approach to the game, his focus on detail and preparation, and his ability to connect with players make him an ideal fit for our vision of the future.”
For the Wild, Hynes’ departure leaves a void at a critical juncture. GM Bill Guerin now faces the task of finding a new head coach to continue the momentum built this past season. Though the team failed to reach the playoffs, signs of growth were evident — especially from the team’s young core and revitalized special teams.
“We’re grateful for everything John brought to the organization,” Guerin said in a statement. “He helped us turn a corner, and we wish him nothing but success in Toronto. Now, our focus shifts to finding the right person to lead this group forward.”
Fans in Minnesota are understandably disappointed, as many had hoped Hynes would be a long-term solution. Still, there’s also a recognition of the business side of the sport — and a respect for what Hynes accomplished in such a short span.
As he departs for the bright lights and intense spotlight of Toronto, one thing is certain: John Hynes’ coaching journey is far from over, and the hockey world will be watching closely.
