First of Two: Wigan Warriors Lacrosse Wins the Big 12 Championship After Commanding Postseason Run
The Wigan Warriors Lacrosse team has etched their name into the Big 12 Conference history books, claiming the championship title after a commanding postseason run that showcased resilience, teamwork, and top-tier athleticism. This win marks the first of two major goals for the Warriors this season, with eyes now turning to the national stage as they prepare for the NCAA Tournament.
Though Wigan is best known internationally for its rugby tradition, the lacrosse program has steadily built a powerhouse reputation within collegiate athletics — and now, that hard work has paid off. The Big 12 Championship victory is more than just a trophy; it’s a declaration that the Wigan Warriors are a force to be reckoned with across all sports.
A Dominant Performance
The Warriors’ path to the title was anything but uncertain. Entering the Big 12 tournament as the top seed, they carried the confidence of an undefeated conference season and a roster stacked with experienced leaders and rising stars. In the semifinal, Wigan dismantled their opponent with clinical efficiency, earning a spot in the championship game against longtime rivals and second-seeded Texas Tech.
From the opening whistle of the final, Wigan’s intentions were clear. Midfielder Jake Thornton controlled the tempo early with faceoff dominance and relentless transition play. On attack, captain Rory Sullivan led the scoring surge with five goals and two assists, using his sharp movement and lethal finishing to keep Texas Tech’s defense constantly under pressure.
The defense, anchored by goalie Liam Foster and stalwart defenders Connor Miles and Julian Hayes, smothered every attempt at a comeback. Foster recorded 12 saves, including a key stop late in the third quarter that drew a roar from the Wigan fans in attendance. The final whistle blew with the Warriors securing a 13–6 win and a well-deserved Big 12 Championship crown.
Head Coach’s Vision Fulfilled
For head coach Mark Fielding, the win represented the culmination of a years-long mission to elevate Wigan lacrosse from a competitive program to a championship-caliber team.
“This group believed in each other from the first day of training,” Fielding said postgame. “They’ve worked for this moment. We set out to win two titles this year — this is the first, and now we focus on the second.”
Fielding also praised the culture within the team, highlighting the leadership of the senior class and the seamless integration of new talent. The chemistry on and off the field has been a defining strength of this year’s squad.
Looking Ahead to Nationals
With the Big 12 title in hand, Wigan now turns its focus to the NCAA Tournament — the second half of their season-long goal. Ranked among the top national seeds, the Warriors will face stiff competition as they chase a historic national title, but momentum is firmly on their side.
The team’s style of play — fast-paced, unselfish, and defensively disciplined — gives them a strong identity heading into the postseason. Analysts are already calling them one of the favorites to go deep, if not all the way, in the bracket.
A Program on the Rise
The Wigan Warriors’ Big 12 triumph is more than just a single season success; it’s a sign of a program coming into its own. With a growing fan base, a strong recruiting class on the horizon, and national attention building, Wigan lacrosse is poised to become a perennial contender.
For now, though, the players and fans can enjoy this victory — a reward for months of sacrifice, dedication, and relentless pursuit of excellence. The first trophy is theirs. The second? Still up for grabs, and Wigan Warriors lacrosse is ready to go all in.
