The Boston Red Sox are interested in a free-agent target of the Baltimore Orioles.
It will get harder for the Baltimore Orioles to acquire pitchers because other teams will want to sign the players they are pursuing.
A number of other teams have expressed interest in Dylan Cease, Corbin Burnes, Lucas Giolito, and other top prospects among the available starters, all of whom the Orioles have been linked to.
The Boston Red Sox are reportedly interested in Giolito, according MLB.com.
After having a terrible second half of the 2023 season with the Los Angeles Angels and Cleveland Guardians, the right-handed veteran is a buy-low possibility. He recorded an ERA of 6.89 in six starts with the Angels and 7.04 in six starts with the Guardians.
This was a notable decline for a starter who finished each of the 2019–2021 seasons with an ERA below four. Before being moved in 2023, Giolito started 21 games for the Chicago White Sox, going 131 innings with 131 strikeouts and a 3.79 ERA.
Giolito might be a player that joins Baltimore with big-league experience while still fitting their schedule. He might be the No. 3 in their rotation with the deal as it stands, and it probably wouldn’t last more than a few seasons.
He would be an arm that could devour innings, at the absolute least.
Apart from the COVID season, he has thrown at least 161 2/3 innings since 2018. For an arm that has also been successful for the most of his career, that is a major plus.
The Orioles will have difficult choices to make while they search for pitching. Although they have long been interested in Cease, it is still unclear if the White Sox will make a bid for him.
Baltimore will likely be active in the market soon because they can’t afford to miss out on other opportunities by attempting to sign a non-movable player.
