On June 26, the Chicago Blackhawks traded Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno to the Boston Bruins in exchange for Mitchell. Alec Regula, a defenceman, was also traded by the Blackhawks to Boston.
On July 10, Mitchell, a 2017 NHL Entry Draft second-round selection of the Blackhawks, agreed to a one-year, one-way deal with the Bruins. Whether he plays in the NHL or the AHL, he is making $775,000 this season.
Mitchell recorded 11 goals and 24 assists for 35 points in 57 games with the Rockford IceHogs, the Blackhawks’ AHL affiliate, in 2021–2022. Though he was regarded by many scouts as one of Chicago’s greatest defensive prospects, he was never able to establish himself at the highest level.
Following his 2017 draft selection, Mitchell attended the University of Denver, where he amassed 18 goals, 71 assists, and 89 points in three seasons. He made the decision to sign a three-year entry-level contract with the Blackhawks instead of playing his senior year at Denver.
With a 20-7-6 record and 46 points, the Bruins lead the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. They play the New Jersey Devils at home on Saturday before taking a short flight to Detroit, Michigan, to play the Detroit Red Wings the next day.
