1996: In exchange for minor league pitcher Chad Fox, the Braves send outfielder Mike Kelly to Cincinnati. Although he had been one of Atlanta’s best prospects, Kelly had trouble breaking through in the major leagues. He played in 127 games for the Braves, but in 233 plate appearances, he only hit.220/.273/.383. He also had five home runs.
1903: For $18,000, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery buy the Baltimore team and relocate it to Manhattan, where they would later form the New York Highlanders, the forerunners of the modern-day New York Yankees.
Frank Navin is named president of the Detroit Tigers in 1908. Bennett Park, their home field, will become “Navin Field” and eventually become Tiger Stadium.
1952: Red Sox star Ted Williams is called up to active duty to fight in the Korean War by the U.S. Marines. Williams will make a cameo appearance in 1952, but he won’t be back in the starting lineup until the end of 1953.
1976: Charles Ruppert, vice president of the Giants, announces the team’s $13.3 million sale to a Toronto-based company. George Moscone, the San Francisco mayer, will receive a preliminary injunction to stop the franchise from transferring.
1980 saw the induction of Duke Snider and Al Kaline into the Hall of Fame. While Snider was chosen on his eleventh attempt, Kaline is the tenth player to be elected in his first year of eligibility.
1989: In their first year of eligibility, Johnny Bench and Carl Yastrzemski are elected to the Hall of Fame.
In 1990, Joe Morgan and Jim Palmer were elected to the Hall of Fame on their first try.
2002: Billy Wagner signs a $27 million, three-year contract with the Astros.
2005: The New York Mets and Carlos Beltran reach an agreement on a seven-year, $119 million contract.
2012: In his third year of running, Barry Larkin gets elected to the Hall of Fame.
2022: Rachel Balkovec is appointed by the Yankees to lead the Tampa Tarpons of the Low A league.
